Made to measure radiator covers designed for your home, built in our own London workshop, installed by our team.
Radiators keep a home warm, but few of them earn their place visually. Budget flat-pack MDF covers from the big retailers do a basic job, but they come in a handful of standard sizes, leave gaps at the wall, and rarely sit comfortably in a period home. Our made to measure radiator covers are proper joinery pieces: designed to the millimetre, built from premium materials, and engineered so your radiator still does its job.
Noba & Stod designs and builds made to measure radiator covers for London homes. Every cover is built in our own workshop from premium carcass materials, such as birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF, with correct heat clearances and generous grille area so warmth still flows into the room. Prices start from £350 (excl VAT), with a typical range of £350-£900 per cover, and lead times of 4-6 weeks.

A Made to Measure Fit
An off-the-shelf cover comes in standard widths; your hallway does not. Every bespoke radiator cover we make is measured on site and designed to the millimetre: shaped to follow the contours of your walls, sitting flush against skirting boards, and lined through with any joinery beside it. Whether you need a small radiator cover for a narrow landing or a three-metre run beneath a bay window, the fit is exact, with no gaps and no filler strips.

Radiator Covers with Storage
A radiator always sits exactly where you want furniture. A radiator cover with storage solves both problems at once: a deep top for lamps and post in the hallway, a radiator cover with drawers beneath a window, a bench with a lift-up seat, or a full window-seat combination with cushions and shelving at each end. We often build covers into larger schemes, from media walls to under-stairs storage, so the whole room reads as one piece of design.

Any Style, Any Colour
Every cover is spray-finished in our workshop, in any colour you can name: heritage whites and greens, deep navy, or a matt black radiator cover that turns the radiator into a feature rather than an apology. Natural oak and walnut tops are available where you want warmth underhand, and we colour-match existing panelling, skirting and cabinetry so the new cover looks original to the room.

Designed for Heat and Airflow
A radiator cover only works if the radiator still does. We design every cover with proper clearance around the panel, generous open grille area, and a vented plinth so cool air is drawn in at the base and warm air released at the top. Fronts lift away or hinge open, so valves and bleed points stay serviceable. A projecting radiator shelf top also pushes warm air out into the room instead of straight up the wall.
Radiator Cover Styles We Build
Every custom radiator cover starts with your room, your radiator’s dimensions and output, and the joinery around it. These are the four styles London clients ask for most.
Shaker-Framed Covers
A classic framed front with an inset grille, echoing the Shaker doors found on kitchens and alcove cupboards across London’s period housing stock. Timeless, easy to colour-match, and the natural choice where a cover needs to sit beside existing bespoke joinery.
Best for: Victorian and Edwardian homes, hallways, sitting rooms.
Slatted Covers
Vertical or horizontal timber slats give clean, contemporary lines and the largest possible open area for airflow. Slat spacing is set around your radiator’s output, and the whole front lifts away for servicing. Painted or natural timber.
Best for: Modern flats, Scandinavian-style interiors, home offices.
Fluted Covers
Fine fluted or reeded panels catch the light and add texture without pattern. A favourite in current interior schemes, fluting works beautifully in matt colours and pairs well with curved corners and a deep top acting as a radiator shelf.
Best for: Statement hallways, bedrooms, dressing rooms.
Metal Grille & Brass Mesh Covers
Our premium option pairs painted or hardwood frames with woven brass mesh, antique-finish grilles or perforated metal inserts, and can extend to brass inlays or fully metal-framed fronts. The metalwork lifts a practical cover into a piece of furniture.
Best for: High-end renovations, period restorations, designer schemes.
Materials, Grilles & Finishes
A radiator cover lives next to a heat source, so material choice matters more than it does for almost any other piece of joinery. You can read more about how we specify timber and board on our materials page.
Carcass Materials
We build from premium carcass materials, such as birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF, selected to cope with constant warm-and-cool cycling without warping, cupping or opening joints. The right material is specified for each project and budget.
Grilles, Mesh & Slats
Timber slats, routed grille panels, perforated boards, and woven brass or steel mesh. The open area is calculated around your radiator’s output, so the cover breathes properly rather than simply looking as though it does.
Workshop Spray Finish
Covers are sprayed in our booth, not painted on site. Multiple coats with sanding between layers produce a hard, heat-tolerant surface in any colour reference you give us, including matt black and deep heritage shades.
Hardware & Access
Drawers and doors run on high-quality soft-close hardware. Fronts are fixed with concealed catches so they lift away in seconds, keeping valves, thermostats and bleed points fully accessible for servicing.
Is a Made to Measure Radiator Cover Worth It?
An honest answer: not always. If you need to tidy a standard-size radiator in a rental, a budget flat-pack cover from the big retailers does the job. Custom made radiator covers earn their keep when the fit, the finish and the room matter: awkward widths, period skirting, a colour scheme to match, storage to gain, or a hallway where the cover is the first thing guests see.
| Flat-pack retail cover | Made to measure by Noba & Stod | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Budget, off the shelf | From £350 (excl VAT) |
| Sizes | A few standard widths | Any size, from a small radiator cover to multi-metre runs |
| Fit | Fitted as supplied, gaps filled on site | Shaped to follow the contours of your walls |
| Airflow | Generic grille pattern | Grille area and clearances designed around your radiator’s output |
| Finish | Primed or pre-painted | Workshop spray finish in any colour, including matt black |
| Storage | Top shelf only | Drawers, benches, window seats, shelving surrounds |
Does a Radiator Cover Block Heat?
A badly designed one can. A fully boxed-in radiator behind a small decorative grille traps warm air and forces the thermostat to work harder. Ours are engineered the opposite way: generous open grille area, proper clearance above and around the panel, and a vented plinth that lets cool air feed the convection cycle. Designed like this, heat loss is minimal, and the projecting top acts as a radiator shelf that directs warmth into the room instead of letting it streak up the wall or vanish behind curtains.
There is a safety benefit too. Modern radiators run hot to the touch, and a cover puts a cool, rounded-edge surface between the panel and small hands, which is why bespoke radiator covers are so often part of nursery and playroom projects. The radiator itself stays fully serviceable: every front we make lifts away or hinges open for bleeding, balancing and valve access.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do radiator covers block heat?
A well-designed cover loses very little heat. We build in generous grille area, proper clearance around the panel, and a vented plinth so cool air keeps circulating, while the projecting top directs warmth into the room rather than up the wall. Fully boxed-in covers with small decorative grilles are the ones that cause problems, and we do not build those.
What is the difference between made to measure and off-the-shelf radiator covers?
Off-the-shelf covers come in a handful of standard sizes and are fitted as supplied, so gaps are common. Made to measure radiator covers are designed around your exact radiator, wall and skirting, shaped to follow the contours of your walls, and finished in any colour. They cost more than a flat-pack cover, but they fit precisely, breathe properly and last for decades.
How much do made to measure radiator covers cost in London?
A made to measure radiator cover starts from £350, and most single covers fall within a typical range of £350-£900 depending on size, style and finish. A cover with integrated storage or a bench runs £600-£1,500, while whole-hallway or multi-cover projects are priced per survey. Prices are a guide and exclude VAT, and every project is quoted individually after a free home consultation.
How long does a bespoke radiator cover take?
Typical lead time is 4-6 weeks from design approval: around a week for drawings and colour choices, then three to four weeks in the workshop for cutting, assembly and spray finishing. Installation itself is quick, with most covers fitted in a few hours and even large window-seat combinations completed within a day.
Can you match my existing panelling or joinery?
Yes. We colour-match any paint reference and replicate frame profiles, mouldings and grille patterns so the new cover reads as part of the original scheme. Radiator covers are often built alongside our alcove cupboards, fitted wardrobes and media walls, so a whole room can be finished as one consistent piece of joinery.
Do you make radiator covers across London?
Yes. We design, build and install bespoke radiator covers in every London borough, from Richmond and Wimbledon to Hampstead, Islington and Greenwich, as well as the Home Counties. Site surveys, delivery and installation are all handled by our own team, working from our London workshop. Start with a free home consultation and we will take it from there.
